Always Name Your Race Cars After Insects

I "watch" Speed Channel (as in leave it on in the background) and the show Hot Rod TV was on.  Hey, they are talking about old race cars.  This is the Marmon Wasp, the winner of the first ever Indianapolis 500 in 1911.

If it was the number 41 and had a red & blue paint job, I would've pinched myself.  Cause one of the most famous race cars in history is almost named after the same insect as the Hornet from Daytona USA.  Hornets are a subset of wasps so they're relatively the same.  Is that a coincidence or was Nagoshi-San onto something???

About the first Indianapolis 500, it is a funny story...  It was basically a soap box derby but more people got hurt.  Race cars back then drove an average of 75 mph (120 kph).  Bear in mind the race was always 500 miles so it took 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 8 seconds for Ray Harroun, driver of the #32 Marmon Wasp, to finish.  The track was laden with white sand to absorb the oil.  A car's tire came off.  One guy died and six others were injured.  There were pace cars, pit stops, and 80,000 fans in attendance so this was a "legit" event.

Nowadays, Indy Motor Speedway can seat 400,000 fans (largest sporting venue in the world) and the 500 is aired on ABC every year as everyone makes a big deal out of it despite the fact no one cares about Indy Car anymore, or something.  I care about Indy Car...if only someone on Speed Channel told me when the races come on cause they always happen when I'm NOT watching the TV...

Black & white footage doesn't help me see the sponsors...
What is that, Go Daddy and Red Bull sponsoring cars in 1911???  NOPE!!
Lovin' the shoutout to the "King of Speed" from Daytona...

And if this old timey news footage wasn't hectic enough, guess what--this is 1911 we're talking about. Do you think a bunch of judges could keep track of the positions of 40 cars over that time span? After 10 minutes, everyone lost track of the positions. Then about 200 miles in, a spin out near the judges' stand caused them to flee, throwing any record-keeping out the window.  So Ray Harroun "won" because he was such a swell guy who drove a car made in Indianapolis and was good friends with the president of the track. Hey, read this.

I like this picture from Ron Hoskins at Getty Images (from the previous link) cause we love cars and we need more old-school cars in our vidya games.  Oh wait...

We already do, thanks Amusement Vision, no thanks to you AM2!!!

EDIT: Oh yeah, you can't forget about the 1951 Hudson Hornet, made famous by Doc Hudson from the Cars movie.

Just so you know, Cars is THE BEST PIXAR MOVIE!  *readers rage*

DAYTONA USA YYYYEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG SEGA!!!!!!!!!!??????????

Good, it's coming out for XBL and PSN very soon!!!  But why no hard copies of the game?

I think it is interesting that the AM2 logo is there. Maybe the actual AM2 team OR Toshihiro Nagoshi is involved! I would like to learn more.

Also, 8-players max is really lame. I know the original had just 8-players but come on. Not like I'm surprised if this is a high-definition port.  At least the draw distance & textures look damn good.  Like what they did with the XBL Perfect Dark port--more of the same goodness...

EDIT: Just realize the Achievement list has been leaked.  Most are easy but three of them are interesting.  Challenge Mode???  Survival Mode???  Karaoke Mode???  Karaoke, awesome...wish it were like Rock Band though (match the pitch).  GET THESE SONGS INTO ROCK BAND!!!

But really Sega...now that I think about it. You're doing it all wrong. Here, let me illustrate what you should be doing:

GET THE HINT?????  I got plenty more Photoshops to go through!!!!!  Including Daytona: CCE and Virtua Racing!!!!

I'M BACK, BABY!!!!!

BTW, I'm fully convinced that BlogSpot hates Internet Explorer. Because whenever I post the YT embed code in IE, it screws it all up. Not so in Firefox. Plus, not to mention I won't stay logged in on IE. If only Firefox wouldn't take five minutes to start up then maybe I won't have to resort to IE.

DAYTONA USA PORT FOR NEXT-GEN CONSOLES???

http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/3ee9cf339ddee09eca2575ca000be1e3/99042a5f47346853ca25790c005d694a?OpenDocument

A NeoGAF poster picked up on this yesterday and wasn't mainstream news until now.

We still don't know a whole lot about this right now, but trademarks like this have popped up preceeding the release of OutRun Online Arcade and Sega Rally Online Arcade.  So odds are this is true.

It even bears the name DAYTONA USA.  As if they got the Daytona trademark back.  Although we don't know if it's the original arcade Daytona USA (1994) or the Dreamcast Daytona USA (2001).  I wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter.

This. Is. BIG.

BLUE SKIESSSSS!!!!!!

------------

EDIT: Alright guys, this is an addendum to what I said before.  So bust out the Gorilla Glue and keep your heads (or asses...any body parts that flew off) on.  I know that getting a new Daytona game is a big effin deal (believe me, I know) but we can't just drop everything and spend our time being whipped into a frenzy about this...we know NOTHING about the game so far other than that it has the Daytona license again.  And it will most certainly be a port of game we already have.  Remember that we have the Nebula Model2 emulator so we can play Daytona USA online so it's not like this is gonna be a brand new game.

 Don't let this be you.

Also, I really love Kotaku's post on this Daytona USA announcement.  First of all, it's nice that they'd mention the game in the first place, but it really sucks.  The headline is "Daytona USA May Be Coming To A Video Game Console Near You (Again)."  Then they go on to sarcastically talk about the game, citing that it also came out for PC, Saturn, Dreamcast, etc.

What an asinine post.  We haven't gotten a new Daytona game in TEN YEARS.  I mean, I can understand talking crap if the game came out in short periods of time (see Yakuza, Call of Duty, etc.) but Daytona's different.  There's many series that have appeared on many consoles.  Like, uh...Ridge Racer!  Burnout!  Need for Speed!  What the hell?  Were they even around to care about Daytona USA for the Dreamcast or even the PC?  And even then, there have only been four unique Daytona games--Daytona 1, 2, CCE, and Dreamcast.  And Daytona didn't even appear on THAT many consoles anyway--just Arcade, PC, Saturn, and Dreamcast.  Wow, awesome lineup there!

Close enough.

Kotaku sucks, nuff said.  And this previous post they made sucks too.  The only thing worse is G4TV.  And it takes a hell of a lot of effort to topple them.

Also, I wonder if Nagoshi-san is going to come out and say something about the game.  HELL NO he ain't.  Too busy making Yakuza games and Binary Domain, gee whiz.

JUST WAIT PEOPLE, WE'LL GET THE GAME SOON ENOUGH...  In a few months, just like OutRun & Sega Rally.

EDIT AGAIN: Might as well throw this in here.  I normally don't say this enough but...thanks Sega.  Mad props in my book...

This also inspires me to create another poll in my blog, just to see what everyone thinks about this...

Daytona USA Fan Art

Do you like fan art?  Sure you do!  Well, here's some pics I found off the infamous art site, deviantArt...here we go.  Remember to click on the pics to enlarge them.  I'm only posting Daytona pics now--I'll post the rest later (don't want too many pics in one post).  And these aren't all the fan cars I posted earlier, this is...you know, actual artwork.  EDIT: Also see OutRun fan art and Crazy Taxi & Sega Rally fan art.

Already seen these before, but this is a fine-looking wallpaper I might add.

Pit crew now and then.

Yeah, Scud Race cars.  These are for Forza 2 but I saw ones relatively identical in Forza 3 marketplace...look for them yourself.

Ok, gotta draw the line there.  Hope you enjoyed some fan art...now write me some fan fiction, losers.  Also check out Daytona fan cars for: Nascar Racing 2003, Forza 1, Trackmania, or even my Daytona 2 Forza 3 cars.  ADIOS.

MORE AWESOME DAYTONA USA FAN CARS!!!

WARNING TO SLOW INTERNET USERS...aw hell too late, you already opened this page.

This is a continuation of this article I wrote here.  This Daytona Universe project...recreating all the Daytona USA cars...cause Sega sure as hell won't so make way for the fan stuff.  Thanks DarkHedge!!!

THIS IS NOW YOUR NEW DESKTOP WALLPAPER: Credits.

And now for the rest of the cars.  There's a LOT of them and they're all big-ass .png files.  I took the liberty of shrinking them down as .jpg's so I could show them all at once.

This is the Hornet and JC Eagle, both right out of Daytona 2: Power Edition...

These are the Daytona Dreamcast cars...

These are the Daytona: Championship Circuit Edition cars...(the alternate Hornet was made by someone else: click here)

And these are the Daytona 2 AI cars... (look at the D2 guide book if you are in the dark here).

Here's the link to DarkHedge's gallery where you can see all of his work.

I think it's strange that DarkHedge used the car models that he did...here's some Hornets with different, possibly more detailed models:

Thanks to DarkBlueYoshi: Here and Here.

But that's besides the point, back to D-Univ for NR2003.  Since the last post I made, this guy got to work on all these new cars.  Now that the 40-car grid has been completed (there's other cars besides Daytona ones), download the Nascar Racing 2003 roster, here!!

I tell you what, I'm so glad for you all doing this.  This is a big project but this DarkHedge guy did it.  Props to the D-Univ crew and all the Daytona USA fan-made cars out there.  SAVING DAYTONA USA ONE STEP AT A TIME...I'M SO HAPPY.........*cries*
