Daytona USA Championship Edition: That Other Daytona Game...

Alright, so there's quite a few Sega racers out there I've barely scratched the surface of.  Well here's another one for you: Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition (1996, also known as Daytona: CCE) for the Sega Saturn and its PC cousin, Daytona USA Deluxe (1997).  Both games are nearly identical in terms of source material, though the PC version has one additional track, better graphics (of course), and LAN play.

So here it is.  It's one of those wonderful "Windows 95" CD-ROM games.  You know you're in for a treat here.  Since I never owned a Saturn, I'm much more familiar with the PC version.  It was around 2002 and "Daytona USA Fever" was here.  Since Daytona USA 2 never got a home port and I didn't own a Dreamcast at the time, I bought three overpriced copies of this game off of eBay (charged me S&H three times, bastards).  Fired this bad boy up on the computer and here goes.

Here's the breakdown.  This game has eight cars and five tracks (six if you're on PC version).  The draw distances are farther than that of the original Daytona port.  There's split-screen and LAN play (PC-only, unless you have the rare Saturn net version).  You can also choose from a couple of options, such as the time of day to race and suspension stiffness (not as spectacular as it sounds), but that's about it.

This game was brought to you buy the folks who ported Sega Rally Championship (AM3 aka Hitmaker, I think).  Now this presents a conundrum--it's like Sega Rally and Daytona USA had a bastard child.  Don't get me wrong, this game's good but it feels a tad bit off compared to Daytona USA 1 and 2.  I'll explain why.  But here goes.

And now, I present to you, the CAR LINEUP...

So here's the eight cars in the game as seen in the game's menus.  They all have their hokey one-word names like the "Phoenix" or the "Oriole."  The cars have various stats which affect top speed & handling but that's about it.  The Max wins the honor of being the "Easy Level Car" (slow but good handling) while the Phoenix wins the honor of being the "Hard Level Car" (fast but poor handling).

Nevertheless, I like where AM3 was going with this but the car designs are a bit bland for my taste.  If Sega were to remix this game someday, I say go all-out with the crazy with it.  If there's a white car with the word "Balance" on it, I say it needs to look a lot more spiffy.  Also really strange how they changed the Hornet number & design, as such...

Oops, mirrored textures.  What's wrong AM3, too lazy to make right-side versions of the car textures???

If you zoom in enough, you'll see there's a "TacoBay" sticker on that car.

MUSIC

Believe it or not, the game (the US version at least) doesn't have the Mitsuyoshi vocals.  Every original Daytona song is a remix or a Richard Jacques ditty.  So that's lame.  But you get an all-new Daytona song which is called "Sons of Angels."

That's Jun Senoue on Guitar...the Jun of Crush 40.  And that's Eric Martin on Vocals...same Eric Martin from Mr. Big.  Now I wouldn't know about Mr. Big because lousy-ass Harmonix never released any Mr. Big songs for Rock Band until last month (just one song) so thanks Harmonix, this is all your fault.  But anyway, it's a rockin' song like the Winger band on Daytona USA 2 but not as memorable (for me, anyway...this game didn't get as much playtime as Daytona 2).

EDIT: Also worth mentioning this is the only song in the series that mentions the phrase "Daytona USA."  Let's Go Away doesn't count since the lyrics go "Daytona Let's Go Away."  Doesn't count.

Playing the game on WINDOWS 98

Operating my pirated copy en Español.

It's ass.  I've played both Daytona original and Daytona CCE on the PC and it's just not as fun with a keyboard.  In Deluxe they smoothed out the controls so you can turn reasonably well with keys but the car handling feels so bland that way--there's no "oomph" whenever you turn which way.  Get yourself a joystick/steering wheel and wrestle with the damn menus/graphics settings.  Oh well, you wanna play on the Master Race PC, it's not gonna be easy...

Track Selection (with Gameplay Footage!!!)

Three of the tracks are Three-Seven Speedway, Dinosaur Canyon, and Seaside Street Galaxy.  Holy cow, the three tracks from the original Daytona, how convenient.  Two are Desert Canyon and National Park Speedway which also made an appearance in Daytona USA 2001.

I had a crazy conspiracy theory once--it's that the roller coaster in National Park Speedway were the same ones in the Gameworks Amusement Park--hence both courses were in close proximity of one another.  But from the pics, they aren't even the same coaster so forget it.

...but what about the sixth track???  It's otherwise known as Silver Ocean Causeway.  It doesn't appear in any other racing game.  Here it is (thanks buddy for the Daytona USA 2 music!):

Shoot through the neon-lit tunnel before weaving down-hill as you drive across bridges and green hills.  Then take a sharp U-turn as you drive up-hill through the city and to the finish line.  It's not a fantastic course but it's nice to see some new scenery for once.

Secret Cars

Believe it or not, you can unlock the ACTUAL ORIGINAL #41 HORNET is in this game.  However, it is called the "Daytona" car and it has max stats--208 mph top speed and able to corner on a dime without drifting.  Now that's seriously OP, nerf this car now.  BTW, another Eric Martin song (at 3:12), sweet.

There's also two versions of Uma the Horse in this game too.  It looks pretty much like the horse from the original Daytona...so yeah, here's the best clip I could find (notice the original Sky High version with Mitsuyoshi lyrics...much much better).

BEAUTIFUL AI CARS

All the AI/drone cars look oh so beautiful.  They're color-coded too by speed.  That is, the cars from 1st to 8th are black, cars from 9th to 16th are dark blue, cars from 17th to 24th are orange, etc.  EDIT: Cars segregated by color...ha, that's race-ist!.  Sticks out like sore thumb and I don't like it.

More Useless Gameplay Footage

This is Daytona USA: Netlink Edition which is a super-rare version of Daytona: CCE that has online play.    It's the rarest North American Sega Saturn game.  It can be sold for over $1000.  But so what because the Model 2/3 emulators can do so much more than this game for the price of zero dollars, amazing.  But anyway, check out the evening/night-time lighting in this video--you can see s*** in dark because stock cars don't have actual headlights, remember?

Conclusion

There's some more to be said about the game but since I haven't played this in years, I'll stop here.  I think 15+ years ago this game would've been outstanding but it just lacks the polish of other hallmark Sega racers.  Seeing as the game wasn't touched by the magic hand of Yu Suzuki and the AM2 team, I can see why.  Car handling and graphics don't come close to any arcade versions.  You can purchase the game and see for yourself.  I still have the CD somewhere, maybe I'll check it out (or not).

Review Score: Uh, pick a float value between 6 and 8, it's up to you.

Daytona USA 2 In Forza Four!!!! (Plus More)

THE HEAT
IS
BACK....

Daytona USA 2 cars have been ported to Forza Motorsport 4!!!

They're on the Forza Storefront (all 15, 5 per car) for FREE!!!  Money is not a problem for me.

So Forza 4 will not import car designs.  However, they will import car vinyls.  So I took my Forza 3 cars, copied all 5 sides of the car to their own layer, and pasted them on the Forza 4 cars.  It took a bit of alignment to do so but it was relatively easy I suppose.  So WHY THE HELL couldn't Forza 4 just import car designs from Forza 3 and save us the inconvenience???  The Ford and Chevy stock cars are EXACTLY the same as before.  Oops, way to drop the ball, Turn10.

Sadly, many designs for Forza 2/3 will never make it to 4 unless the previous owners redo the layer process above.  Only the original designer can edit and upload designs.  It's stupid.  Will I ever be able to drive the Seinfeld "Assman" car in Forza 4?  Don't count on it.

Now I was presented with one dilemma while making designs and you may have spotted it already.  They removed the Dodge stock car from Forza 4.  Now why the hell did they do that.  First of all, three car models align perfect with the trio: Chums Gum = Chevrolet, Scorpio = Pontiac (in our case, Dodge), Phantom = Ford.  But now the Phantom and Scorpio share the same model.  Second is that you can't just Ctrl-V, Ctrl-C the vinyls from a Dodge to a Ford/Chevy and have them line up.  So I copied pieces of the Scorpio and lined them up.  Ironed out some of the flaws while I was at it too.

For the Scorpio, I picked the Ford for three dumb reasons.  One, because the Ford has the black spoiler and the Scorpio in Daytona 2 has a black spoiler as well.  Chevy has a while spoiler that's really lame.  Two, because I felt that Ford has the more "stout" stature of the two cars.  Three, because most fan Hornets are using the Chevy model so I wanted to balance it out (Hornet & Chums Gum = Chevy, Scorpio & Phantom = Ford).

I want to talk more about the actual Forza 4 gameplay itself later.  Until then, I'll leave you with some more Sega cars on the Marketplace, none of which I made (except the other Phantom car):

I did this myself...I have an affinity for old boxy cars--in this case, a '71 Nissan Skyline GT-R.  Easy to move vinyls around, ha.

I think you might've seen these two cars from an old arcade game that involves driving on dirt.

The McLaren from Scud Race.

Well, it's not the most perfect Hornet I've seen though it's the most complete.  The Chevy stock car just doesn't do this justice--it needs some old Buick or something.

Nice to see Daytona: Championship Edition get some props--this is a very well done car.  Taco Bay, HAHA!!

Yes, the two Ninja drone cars from Daytona, sweet!

Ok, cya later.

DAYTONA USA PORT FOR NEXT-GEN CONSOLES???

http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/3ee9cf339ddee09eca2575ca000be1e3/99042a5f47346853ca25790c005d694a?OpenDocument

A NeoGAF poster picked up on this yesterday and wasn't mainstream news until now.

We still don't know a whole lot about this right now, but trademarks like this have popped up preceeding the release of OutRun Online Arcade and Sega Rally Online Arcade.  So odds are this is true.

It even bears the name DAYTONA USA.  As if they got the Daytona trademark back.  Although we don't know if it's the original arcade Daytona USA (1994) or the Dreamcast Daytona USA (2001).  I wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter.

This. Is. BIG.

BLUE SKIESSSSS!!!!!!

------------

EDIT: Alright guys, this is an addendum to what I said before.  So bust out the Gorilla Glue and keep your heads (or asses...any body parts that flew off) on.  I know that getting a new Daytona game is a big effin deal (believe me, I know) but we can't just drop everything and spend our time being whipped into a frenzy about this...we know NOTHING about the game so far other than that it has the Daytona license again.  And it will most certainly be a port of game we already have.  Remember that we have the Nebula Model2 emulator so we can play Daytona USA online so it's not like this is gonna be a brand new game.

 Don't let this be you.

Also, I really love Kotaku's post on this Daytona USA announcement.  First of all, it's nice that they'd mention the game in the first place, but it really sucks.  The headline is "Daytona USA May Be Coming To A Video Game Console Near You (Again)."  Then they go on to sarcastically talk about the game, citing that it also came out for PC, Saturn, Dreamcast, etc.

What an asinine post.  We haven't gotten a new Daytona game in TEN YEARS.  I mean, I can understand talking crap if the game came out in short periods of time (see Yakuza, Call of Duty, etc.) but Daytona's different.  There's many series that have appeared on many consoles.  Like, uh...Ridge Racer!  Burnout!  Need for Speed!  What the hell?  Were they even around to care about Daytona USA for the Dreamcast or even the PC?  And even then, there have only been four unique Daytona games--Daytona 1, 2, CCE, and Dreamcast.  And Daytona didn't even appear on THAT many consoles anyway--just Arcade, PC, Saturn, and Dreamcast.  Wow, awesome lineup there!

Close enough.

Kotaku sucks, nuff said.  And this previous post they made sucks too.  The only thing worse is G4TV.  And it takes a hell of a lot of effort to topple them.

Also, I wonder if Nagoshi-san is going to come out and say something about the game.  HELL NO he ain't.  Too busy making Yakuza games and Binary Domain, gee whiz.

JUST WAIT PEOPLE, WE'LL GET THE GAME SOON ENOUGH...  In a few months, just like OutRun & Sega Rally.

EDIT AGAIN: Might as well throw this in here.  I normally don't say this enough but...thanks Sega.  Mad props in my book...

This also inspires me to create another poll in my blog, just to see what everyone thinks about this...

Daytona USA Fan Art

Do you like fan art?  Sure you do!  Well, here's some pics I found off the infamous art site, deviantArt...here we go.  Remember to click on the pics to enlarge them.  I'm only posting Daytona pics now--I'll post the rest later (don't want too many pics in one post).  And these aren't all the fan cars I posted earlier, this is...you know, actual artwork.  EDIT: Also see OutRun fan art and Crazy Taxi & Sega Rally fan art.

Already seen these before, but this is a fine-looking wallpaper I might add.

Pit crew now and then.

Yeah, Scud Race cars.  These are for Forza 2 but I saw ones relatively identical in Forza 3 marketplace...look for them yourself.

Ok, gotta draw the line there.  Hope you enjoyed some fan art...now write me some fan fiction, losers.  Also check out Daytona fan cars for: Nascar Racing 2003, Forza 1, Trackmania, or even my Daytona 2 Forza 3 cars.  ADIOS.

Daytona USA Ebay "Swag"

Oh man, the best thing to owning to the actual Daytona game would be the following wonderful items I've seen on eBay!

An LCD game.  Don't know what an LCD game is?  Click here.  I would love to hear this one-bit (or whatever) rendition of Rolling Start...

The Tiger R-Zone was a portable console that you wore on your head and looked into like a Metal Gear/Splinter Cell device.  It was similar to the Virtual Boy which means it probably sucked big-time.

A stand-up Daytona USA cabinet...I just cannot fathom playing an arcade racer standing up.   Well, these kind of cabinets are much cheaper than the sit-down ones (around $800 for a stand-up and $2000 for sit-down per player).

This is a limited-edition Daytona USA cabinet.  I don't know much about it--I downloaded this pic off of eBay a long time ago.  Don't expect to find many of these bleached white cabinets around any time soon...

A Daytona USA marquee, buy it on eBay somewhere.  These are pretty expensive though--I saw one go for $150.  Would be great for show.

A Daytona USA operator's manual, all right!!!

A Daytona USA guide book.  It's for the Saturn version, not the superior Arcade version.  Well, I can't imagine it sharing anything new since there's tons of Daytona 1-related media on the web, but it's another good thing for collectors.  If I find this book for cheap, I'll take a look at it.

I think this is an arcade guide book with a soundtrack CD attached.  Once again, I know very little about it...

A poster.

The Daytona USA 15th Anniversary Box.  This is a four-disc collection of every song from every Daytona game...Daytona 1, 2, Dreamcast, etc.  No Scud Race or Virtua Racing which is odd since they very well have much to do with the original Daytona as does Daytona 2.  It's redundant for sure since it has multiple versions of Let's Go Away (the Rolling Start song).  Take a look here at the tracklist.  Wait, so there's songs called "Bitchin'" ?  Click here to download it.  It's just a ten-second clip that goes "Daytonaaa," I don't know what's so bitchin about that...

Or (it sounds cruel to say this) you can go to Galbadia Hotel to look up some game soundtracks...I don't recommend you download the whole thing since you're doing Daytona USA a great disservice...

If there's anything cool I forgot, let me know about it.
