Old Racing Game: Rad Racer!!!

It's Rad Racer!  RRAAAAD RRACCCEE---oh never mind.

Since I've got nothing better to talk about, let's talk old NES racing games.  Just got done with R.C. Pro-Am, why not another R-racing game?

This is a 1987 NES classic by Square.  Wait--SQUARE???  Yes, Final Fantasy's Square.  Well, they also made Chocobo Racing which proves that Square can hang with the big boys such as Sega and....uh, no one else cause Sega's the king.

This is the whole game in action--from start to finish in 25 minutes (no continues run which is very difficult).   Now let's evaluate what you see.  You're driving a red Ferrari down the road as object fly by via parallax scrolling.  You're dodging traffic alongside a beach with palm trees and blue skies as well as other colorful landscapes.  You can listen to one of three music tracks.  If you hit an object on the side of the road, you flip over and are placed back on course.

Oh, and there's a girl riding shotgun with you.

I've never played a game like this before--oh wait, it's just an OutRun clone, lol.

OutRun came out in '86, Rad Racer in '87.  Considering the wonderful quality of OutRun home ports at the time, Rad Racer was very good.  It also had the benefit of coming out on the NES while OutRun came out on oddball consoles like the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Master System, and Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Hey if you want to praise Rad Racer, fine by me, but give credit where credit's due...!

Sooo...some more stuff about this game.  You have a choice of two cars at the start--a Ferrari 328 Twin Turbo (which is in OutRun 2 BTW) and an F1 car.  Surprisingly, side-by-side comparisons have proven that both cars are exactly identical in speed.  The only difference is that driving the Ferrari will spawn sports car traffic while driving the F1 car will spawn other F1 cars.  Also, instead of a gear shifter, both cars have an infinite "turbo boost" that makes you accelerate faster but harder to turn.  So good for you!  Automatic transmission FTW!!!  I need naaawwwsssssss...

Guess what?  The top speed in this game is 255 kph (158.45 mph).  This is stupid for two reasons.  One, the range for a byte (or 8 bits) of memory is 0 thru 255.  So basically, they only had one byte to give for the top speed.  FYI, OutRun tops out at 293 kph (TWO BYTES!!!...that's the Yu Suzuki assembly programming).  It just sticks out like a sore thumb.  Second, what the f'n hell are they thinking making an F1 car go 160 mph max???  F1 cars normally drive up to 220 mph.  Same thing with the Ferrari too, though I doubt any of these numbers matter since it's unlikely this game's metrics match real-life speed.

Here it is--here's every track in the game.  1-4 on the left, 5-8 on the right.  The 4th track looks like a Famas assault rifle.  You don't go thru intersections like in OutRun--instead you remain in the same stage for about 2-3 minutes (with a few scenery changes at each checkpoint) then move onto the next one.  Run out of time and you get to restart at the beginning of the level you failed at.  Oh, BTW, this is one hard-ass game so good luck trying to beat it, especially the latter levels where you can't afford to even crash once.  But OutRun was hard too so there's another thing Square copied.  Bravo, Square.

Come to think of it, OutRun really needed more pitch black/neon green tracks so Square delivers again on that front.

This is the last track in the game.  Each track has their own unique traffic cars and here we have a cavalcade of Ferrari Testarossas driving along the beach.  Just like in OutRun.  It's as if Square is mocking us.  Well, go back to your little bishounen games and shove it.

The game also has one more fun feature--3D glasses support!!!  Just hit the select button (or something) and it toggles from normal to 3D mode.  It turns the screen into these hideous hues of red and blue.  Just like modern-day 3D gimmicks, this one sucks too.

Anyway, there's a sequel called Rad Racer 2 which looks very similar but with more polished handling.  And a mph gauge instead of a kph gauge which means a top speed of...255 mph.  Very realistic.  But I don't want to discuss that game now since I have very little to say.  So Rad Racer's pretty cool and it would get a 9.1 in my book, but since it's an OutRun IMPOSTOR, I deduct 9 points so it has a Final Review Score of 0.1.  Don't like it NES fanboys, come at me, bro--I have the Power Glove.

And please check out on R.C. Pro-Am, California Speed, Initial D, RoadBlasters, and Super Sprint/Super-Off Road/Indy Heat.  Damn I love to pimp out other links on my blog.

Sega E3 Booth: IT'S AWESOME, BABY!!! (And More)

And as E3 rolls around the corner once again, this is the time where I complain about the talking heads from Kotaku, GameSpot, G4TV, 1-Up as well as the fat slobs who try to look important by entering a loud room full of electronic devices and "swag" consisting of t-shirts, keychains, and cheap plastic crap.  Wait, I thought E3 was supposed to be blocked to the public...apparently, they reversed on their decision when the angry masses battered open the doors to get inside so there was nothing they could do about it.

RUN RUN RUN TO E3 AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!

So this is supposed to be the 13 games in Sega's booth this year .  This list is from some guy on Kotaku and it doesn't have any sources or anything, but it sounds believeable to me.  EDIT: Never mind, this list is on all the official Sega blogs.  These are the games:

Aliens: Colonial Marines
Anarchy Reigns
Binary Domain
Captain America: Super Soldier
Crush3D
Guardian Heroes
House of the Dead Overkill: Extended
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
Renegade Ops
Rise of Nightmares
Sega Rally Online Arcade
Shinobi
Sonic Generations

And...that list is completely underwhelming.  Sonic Generations is the only thing really worth mentioning.  They will probably reveal some new levels (maybe City Escape and a casino stage).  Old-school Sega diehards will love HotD, Guardian Heroes, and Shinobi, so I like seeing Sega give a few old franchises a nod.  We already have Sega Rally Online Arcade so if they rehash that, it would be stupid.  The rest are just expendable to me.  It's great to see more movie-based games (Captain America & Aliens) as well as Nagoshi's sparking gem of a masterpiece, Binary Domain.  If Nagoshi is there, then someone please kick his ass for me.

This is terrible.  I mean, really, who are the ones begging for a new Captain America??  Seriously?  People want Captain America THAT badly???  Well I guess after Superman renounced his US citizenship, America needs a new hero.  Superman, what a putz.

Yeah, this list may not be 100% correct, but do you really expect Sega to just pop out with a new Daytona or Shenmue game?  Remember how we first discovered OutRun & Sega Rally Online Arcades?  We found this name patents on these Korean websites.  We've seen nothing about a new Daytona, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, anything.  I think Sega is banking all their chips on Sonic Generations, a game that they came out with a month before E3 so if Sega has another game up their sleeve, they'd probably have revealed it already.  The ONLY surprise I can think of is Yu Suzuki popping up to announce Shenmue 3, but that old man is already over his head so don't count on it.

But if something BIG happens, then I'll admit my error.  But I doubt it.

------------

As for the rest of E3, we can already tell what's going to happen.  Microsoft is going to release more Kinect crap in another vain attempt to get the diehards to give it a shot.  Sony will release the new PSP and apologize profusely for the server downage thanks to a mumbling Kaz Hirai (while everyone else makes fun of him for everything).  Nintendo will cause gamers to faint with their new Cafe demo (which will probably be on par with the Xbox 360 but who cares, it's Nintendo, they are WINNERS regardless) and some 3DS games.  Then something on Duke Nukem, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Soul Calibur, and Rage.  Another E3, another waste of time, thank you, please come again.

BTW, this new Internet Explorer sucks horribly.  It lags, my tabs mysteriously vanish for no reason, I'm constantly being logged out of Blogspot, and I can't even find out where the history is on this thing.  Oh well, back to Firefox.

Sega Charity, Sega Rally Arcade, NFS: Shift 2, RR 3D, Dumb Gamers (Dumbarse Links)

I've got a couple of links on the backburner that I really should get out of the way now.

------------

Sega is auctioning a bunch of stuff for charity.  Mostly autographed memorabilia and shirts.  Now you can buy an OutRun 2 poster signed by Yu Suzuki.  Surprisingly I can afford it at the moment (just $250), but it's not worth it.  You have two days left, go go go.

Speaking of which, why is everyone's signature so illegible nowadays?  I mean, you can read my signature.  But other people, it's like they're waving the pen around like an ice skating routine.  What's the deal with that.

Talking about Japan again, they keep talking about the nuke reactors which they've actually got back on power now FYI.  What about the actual damage to the rest of the area?  Possibly 10,000+ dead.  Good Lord.  And I thought I had it bad through Hurricane Katrina.  At least you are hearing barely any news out of Japan which mean things can't get much worse from here.

------------

Hey, if you want to learn more about Sega Rally Arcade, check out my good friend F40's post which goes into more detail about the content in the game.  Worth a read if you're interested.  Remember, 5 tracks and 13 cars.

------------

Another GameFAQs poll! Which company would you most like to see in the next "vs. Capcom" game?...  This one was taken about a week ago out a sample of 60232 votes:

Square Enix: 30.67%
Nintendo: 27.22%
Shonen Jump: 12.53%
Konami: 8.4%
DC: 8.36%
Namco Bandai: 5.7%
Sega: 4.08%
Dark Horse: 3.03%

Why am I not surprised by these polls anymore?  Why do they even bother including Sega anyway?  Outdone by Namco again?  Hey, at least Namco has Soul Calibur and Tekken.  And Square Enix/Nintendo vs. Capcom....ROFL, there's your GameFAQs fanboyism in action.  Go stick to Smash Bros., kids.

------------

Another gamer-turned-racer story: gamer comes in 2nd place in a 12 hour LeMans race.  So this guy out of Spain won the GT5 Academy contest and actually had the opportunity to race a world-class automobile.  He lost by about 10 laps (on Sebring), but considering how long the race is, it's still impressive.

But what's weird is that we had a story a while back about the best iRacing player who couldn't physically do more than ten laps in a Formula 1 car.  But suddenly you got this new guy who apparently has the stamina to go 12 hours of driving?  Maybe this new guy took his protein pills or something, I don't know.

------------

And if you want to watch a professional driver play NFS: Shift 2, there you go.  Game doesn't look too bad.  Nice video, bro.

I wonder if it'll handle like Project Gotham Racing or will it go more simmy like GT or Forza.  Heh, you gotta do some real convincing to make me buy it :)

-------------

EDIT: Oh, and one more thing.  Sorry I'm late to post this.  Joystiq reviews Ridge Racer 3D for the 3DS.  They love it apparently.  Quotes from this review:

It may seem like a cash grab, with the game arriving at launch more or less unchallenged and bearing a well-known name, but while there's probably some element of that at play, there's no denying that Ridge Racer 3D is as strong an entry in the series as there's been in years.

The drifting-focused gameplay, while fundamentally unchanged since the mid-'90s, is pitch-perfect.

I have to hand it to Namco-Bandai: With the exception of omitting online multiplayer, it really put together a solid entry in the series for the 3DS launch, one that's easily high on the list of best titles available for the new system.

Score: 4.5 stars out of 5.

But WHOA there champ!  I seem to recall that two months ago, they put out an article stating the exact opposite--that the game is trash and Namco should be ashamed of themselves.  I quote from this old article:

It's clear why Namco chooses this strategy: it manages to obfuscate the franchise's lack of innovation with the technological advance each generational leap brings.

And here's another mark for unoriginality -- for the umpteenth time, Namco is intent on reusing "favorite courses from the past."

"Competent" is as effusive as I can get.

Ridge Racer 3D continues the series' legacy of producing solid, albeit predictable, launch games. So what if we can't get excited for it?

Lovely.  First, you look at the game and say it sucks.  Then you play it and take it all back.  So what--is it good, bad, what the hell is this?

Good riddance, these gaming blogs like Kotaku and Joystiq are really pushing me to prescription overdose.  Okay, so the two articles are written by different people, but how stupid that they couldn't account for multiple editors' opinions...it's the Wild Wild West when it comes to articles, throw up what you want.

I hope I'm not guilty of the same thing.  Well, maybe with Goldeneye Wii, but I never played the game so so what.

Read my Ridge Racer experience post here.

SEGA: Laughable Game Publisher Straight From The Gamer's Mouth

This is about a GameFAQs poll on Feb. 13, 2011.  I followed this since last night and waited for all the votes to be cast before mentioning it.

The question was "Which major game publisher do you most trust to publish the best games?"  Out of a polling sample from 70,938 voters, the results from best to worst are as follows (rounded to nearest number):

1. Nintendo (26%)
2. Square Enix (19%)
3. Activision Blizzard (11%)
4. Capcom (9%)
5. Sony (6%)
6. Electronic Arts (6%)
7. Konami (5%)
8. Take-Two Interactive (5%)
9. Ubisoft (4%)
10. Namco Bandai (2%)
11. Sega (1.24%)
12. THQ (1%)

Click here to see the poll.  Surprised Valve is not on the list either but they'd rank in the half-way part most likely.

...

Well, let me address a few things.  One, the title is a bit of a misnomer cause you might as well say "Who's your favorite game company?" or something like that.  Oh, and they use the word "Publisher" instead of "Developer" which took me a few glances to pick out.  So Sega gets the benefit of games like Bayonetta and Vanquish here, but that maybe raised their percentage by 0.01-0.02% only for that same gain to be sucked away due to bad games like Full Auto and Iron Man 2.

There really isn't a whole lot to defend here.  They're mostly right, even if you take the GameFAQs bias out of it.  If you saw two anonymous game boxes lying on a table, one with a Nintendo sticker on it, the other with a Sega sticker, which one would you keep?

Do you know who I voted for?  I voted for Sega.  Yeah, me and 882 other sorry losers.  Why?  Cause of Sega Racers and cause of this:

I mean, really, I just don't buy into all these nerdgasms over Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid or whatever.  You can grill me for that but I don't care.  If Sega was to make a good racing game, I would check it out!  Screw Mario Kart or Need for Speed or Chocobo Racing or whatever other crap you got.  I'd enjoy a good Sega racer 10x more than your crappy little RPGs and stuff.

But really, you had Sega back in the 90's, the only company that could compete with Nintendo, on top of the world, but then crash-boom-wham-bomb-smack-dead.  If they're not releasing some crappy Sonic game, it's a hackneyed rehash of some old ported game in a vain attempt to drum up some nostalgia factor, but the public doesn't buy it for more than a minute.  Yes, you got Yakuza, Bayonetta, and hopefully some new good Sonic games, but that's enough.

Let's talk about Nintendo.  Employees who work at Nintendo vs. employees who work at Sega...what's the difference?  Cause I know that the employees at Sega have opposable thumbs (I think).  Is it a lack of resources, skill, or motivation that's holding these guys back?  I'm starting to think so.  Like I said before (and I still believe it), Nintendo is in Cruise Control--they make another Mario or Zelda game, it's an instant hit, Nintendo is God-like, nothing can stop them, etc.  So why does Sega even BOTHER anymore?

Just looking around and I see another example of a great Nintendo product...

Sega should do what Nintendon't.  MAKE A GOOD DAYTONA USA GAME CAUSE NINTENDO DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE A TRADITIONAL RACING GAME.  There, that's one Achilles Heel that Nintendo has.  Oh wait, no one likes good racing games anymore, my bad.  But at least there's urinal games that Nintendo won't touch.  Yeah, Nintendo is making motion control hardware, Sega is making urinal hardware, makes sense, right.  Oh, and pachinko machines, there you go Sega, a hall of fame lineup right there!  Sticking it to Nintendo.

Oh, and one more thing.  SEGA LOST TO NAMCO.  Wtf.  I mean, what's Namco doing nowadays besides that crap Ridger Racer Unbounded game?  Pushing that Body & Brain Connection game that's basically Nintendo's Brain Age for the Kinect?  Not saying the game is bad, but where's the hallmark titles out of Namco, like...uh, Soul Calibur, Time Crisis, Tekken...Klonoa...?

Dr. Kawashima works for the highest bidder.

And lol THQ, what are they doing on this list...?  Hey, Sega didn't come in dead last, so if there's a slight victory to be gained here, it's this.

EDIT: I know in the past that I didn't really "care" about all these popularity lists (i.e. best games ever made), but this isn't just a list, this has to do with Sega's ineptitude altogether.

Other Japanese Game Publishers

Okay, I'm looking at some of the GameFAQs polls of the day and they went through some Japanese companies, listed some game series for each, and asked which is your favorite.  Because we know Sega is out there as a big player until they took it in the chin after the DC and were basically neutered, it's kind of interesting to see what their rivals are up to...  Makes me feel bad for Sega, they are basically the laughing stock of Japan as far as I'm concerned.

DISCLAIMER: When I mention this game or that game and get mad, it doesn't mean that the games specifically suck or are bad or that I hate them and wish they didn't exist--they're all good in some way.  I'm just giving you my personal thoughts on the game, not necessarily commenting on the quality of the game unless I so feel like it.

Also, GameFAQs has a bias towards RPG/Adventure games which explains stuff like Zelda >>> Mario, etc.

------------

Capcom: Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Megaman, THAT'S IT.  The definitive trifecta of horror, fighting, and platform-shooter games.  Surprisingly, RE and Megaman got over 25% each and SF got 13%.  But Capcom has other games like Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Dead Rising, Breath of Fire, Phoenix Wright, holy crap, they make Sega look bad, really bad.  They don't have a definitive racing game--they had that Auto Modellista game which as far as I'm concerned is a joke so really.  Overall they are probably #2 behind Nintendo.  This whole 2-D Fighter genre is just too much for games like Tekken or even Virtua Fighter to compete with, sorry.

Konami: They have Metal Gear Solid and that should be all as far as I'm concerned.  Number one choice at 38%.  Oh they have Castlevania too which is 22%.  They also have Contra, DDR, and Silent Hill.  Oh yeah, it was also Konami that made the Enthusia PS2 racing game which was nearly up to par with Gran Turismo but hardly as popular.  I think Sega could take these hooligans but knowing Sega, they will putter across the finish line with four blown tires.  Next.

Namco-Bandai: Tales of Fill In The Blank is number one, 27%.  Okay, I just don't give a damn about stupid RPGs, just let it pass.  They made Pac-Man, another juggernaut, but since people have their heads up their asses, they don't care about it anymore--10%.  You also got Ridge Racer, the series that was most identical to Daytona USA and Sega, but they've kind of fizzled out despite getting numerous versions for recent consoles.  Sega is still #1 baby when it comes to racers.  Tekken and Soul Calibur are still legendary but once again, they aren't making headline news.  The most recent SC games are just getting obnoxious as far as I'm concerned.  Katamari Damacy, okay yeah, roll up stuff.  They also have Time Crisis which is one of the few arcade games left that I actually am interested in.  They also have Klonoa and Digimon for the kiddies.  No one cares anymore, right.  If there's a company that's most similar to Sega in terms of games and at falling asleep at the wheel, it's Namco so I sympathize with them a little.  Just a little.

Square-Enix: Final Fantasy (51%), Kingdom Hearts (18%), Chrono Trigger (15%).  Just walk away cause nothing else matters.  The less said about Square, the better, although that Einhander game was kind of cool.

Sega: Okay, here we go.  Root for the home team!!  The choice are...:

Panzer Dragoon -- 2.48%

Phantasy Star -- 12.08%

Shenmue -- 6.54%

Shining Force -- 7.14%

Sonic the Hedgehog -- 55.8%

The House of the Dead -- 6%

Total War -- 4.41%

Virtua Fighter -- 2.62%

Yakuza -- 2.92%

What kind of lousy-ass choices are these!?  Virtua Fighter--3%!?!?  Total War, Yakuza, WTF?  Shenmue has like two games and it gets at least 7%, wow how amazing.  I see a lack of Daytona USA but nothing could be more predictable.  That reminds me that Sega has always been one to spread the goodness around to many, many series, but still, looking at the choices we have...oh man, how weak.  Take this poll 10 years ago and you'd see something else.  But really, if it weren't for Sonic, Sega would be dead.  Oh man, this is sad.

Nintendo: Zelda THAT'S IT EVERYONE I JUST SUMMED UP NINTENDO.  Okay, if it takes just one good game to destroy the others, then how about SUPER MARIO, POKEMON, Kirby, Metroid, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros., F-Zero, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Wii Sports, I mean, just look at the lineup in Smash Bros Brawl.

............

I mean, look at Smash Bros. Brawl.  Sega and Konami were performing all sorts of favors (what kind, you use your imagination) just to get ONE of their characters in the game.  So there you go, Sonic and Solid Snake, yucking it up with Nintendo's cast of characters...

Did I mention that Nintendo has sold over 74 million Wiis and 132 million DSes worldwide as of June 2010?  Let that sink in for a moment.

.....

Sega has no chance, they really don't.  At least we know that Nintendo just plain sucks at racing games cause every Mario Kart game they've released has been highly flawed with maybe the exception of the original SNES version (tiers, snaking, stupid sprite cardboard cutout characters, you name it).  And the latest F-Zero game?  Sounds great but that was SEGA that had a hand in making that game, did you know that?  Sega is still #1 in racing games, sorry, call me a homer, but that's how I see it.

Oops, forgot about the poll results...Zelda got 100% just leave it at that.

Oh yeah, there's one more game company I forgot to mention...let's get it over with.

Sony: Sony hasn't been one to make games but they have some damn good hardware.  The PS3 makes the Xbox 360 look like a baby's toy.  God of War run away with this at 33%, is there any surprise?  I mean, I know I'm going to seem like an ass, but what's the big deal with that game?  You play as some burly man with two swords, slashing the crap out of monsters and other stuff, you kill Greek gods and have rough sex with the goddesses.  Tons of gore, violence, and sex.  Am I missing something here, or does this game seem like a glaring embarassment of society in general?  You have Ratchet and Clank at 18%, Gran Turismo at 12%, and Twisted Metal at 10%.  Gran Turismo is one of the only good racing games left and frankly, I don't see anything else barring Mario Kart and MAYBE Burnout getting higher ratings.  SOCOM, Little Big Planet, yada yada yada, Sony's more of a hardware company and recently the PS3 is really picking up steam so look out Nintendo and Microsoft.

------------

There's other companies though that the polls forgot to mention and two come to mind--Tecmo and SNK.  Tecmo made Monster Rancher/Farm which is one of my favorite series of all time but that's six feet under.  They've also made Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Fatal Frame, and Tecmo Super Bowl which at least have some relevance today.  SNK made Metal Slug and a load of fighters such as King of Fighters.  They also made their own console, the Neo Geo, which bit the bullet just like the Dreamcast so at least we gotta give props where they're due.

------------

Wow, this was really painful to go through.  Sega, what a lame pathetic company to be a fan of.  Nintendo, Capcom, and Square are laughing it up while Sega is out on the street begging for spare change.  I can't take this anymore--Dreamcast was Sega's Alamo, and they've lost it.  I got a headache, I'm gonna go do something else and go away for a while.  geez...

Oh yeah, and one more thing.  If you think I'm a Sega fanboy who's blowing hot air, hey, take a loookat all of the Sega video game franchises here, cause there's a lot:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_video_game_franchises

No excuse for Sega to be dirt compared to everyone else.
